Russian athletes win 4 medals at the IAAF World Championships

14.08.2017

Maria Lasitskene /APRussian sportsmen have won four prizes at the World Athletics Championships in London, TASS informs. High jumper Maria Lasitskene who didn't loose even single tournament this season, has become two-time World champion.

Sergey Shubenkov in the 110 metres hurdles has taken silver. Jumper at length Darya Klishina and hammer thrower Valeriy Pronkin took also two silver medals. Last two victories were unexpected for athletics’ amateurs as well as for experts: neither Klishina nor Shubenkov were favorites of the competitions. The Russian jumper demonstrated seven meters’ result. Klishina missed just several cm more for the gold. The gold medal was won by American jumper Brittney Reese, who showed the result of seven meters and two cm. The third place belongs to the US jumper as well.

“I am very glad today, as this is my first medal at the World Championships. Yes, I lacked only two cm to take the gold, but it’s ok”, Klishina said. She has commented that she has worked out her way to the top for many years.

Russian hammer thrower Valeriy Pronkin who turned twenty-three this July took part in the major International tournaments for adults for the first time. He demonstrated the result of 78,16 meters. Polish sportsmen Pawel Fadjek and Wojciech Nowicki took the first and the third places correspondently.

This tournament will go down in history of the World Athletics Championships as the unique one where Russian athletes could not wear the National uniform competing under the neutral banner. The Russian national anthem will not be played for the gold-prize winner Maria Lasitskene.

Let us remember, the IAAF has cleared 47 Russian athletes to compete internationally this year under the neutral flag after they demonstrated that their training environment met its anti-doping standards.
