Ushakov Medal is awarded to the son of the British WW2 hero

Fyodor Ushakov Medal handing over ceremony took place in General Consulate of Russian Federation in Houston, Texas. Hero Russian naval commander and admiral of the 18th century Fyodor Ushakov has modernised the Russian Navy in the 18th century. His military operations are still carefully studied in naval academies worldwide nowadays.

The medal was intended for the British citizen Josef Gleaves Stanley who has participated in Northern convoys during World War Two. The medal was issued by Russian President’s decree from 10.03.2014. Unfortunately British hero did’t live to see it, therefore it was given to his son James who resides now in Texas.

In his speech the Consul General of Russia Alexander Pisarev has stressed on the great contribution of Arctic convoys in the victory over Fascism. He has payed tribute to the courage of people who transported military cargoes from USA to Murmansk port.

James Stanley and his wife have thanked the council for the honorary award. They are touched that Russia and its president cherish the memory of the British people who has participated in the World War 2. The couple have expressed their continued commitment to save the award that will be passed to future descendants of Josef Gleaves Stanley.
