Serbian village is named after Vladimir Putin

02.08.2017

Inhabitants of the Serbian village Adzince have voted to rename the village “Putinovo” in honor of the Russian president, RIA Novosti reports. Villagers have submitted a formal request to rename Adzince to the local council, and it was confirmed. The village located near town Medveda was formally called by the name of one of the Turkish conquerors.

All ten families that live in this community are Russophiles. They often gather at the community leader Milutin Petrusic’s house, decorated with pictures of Vladimir Putin and famous Serbs who were fighting for the freedom from the Ottoman yoke in 19th century.

The initiator of renaming is Petrusic, who has commented that all inhabitants were unhappy with the old name because it belongs to one of Turkish conquerors. The name Adzince was given to this tiny place 500 years ago. Petrusic says that renaming was an “ideal decision” for everybody. Inhabitants of Putinovo don't hide the great sympathy towards Russian leader. They like his political views and policies undertaken towards Serbian people and their country.
