American premiere of the The Taming of the Shrew by Bolshoi Theater took place at the Lincoln Center Festival on Wednesday, July 26, TASS informs.

The piece is staged by famous French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot. He has used 25 fragments of Dmitry Shostakovich’s music. Although the choreographer has described this work as a huge challenge, at the final press conference he has made a joke: “I have tamed the Bolshoi, and the Bolshoi has tamed me.”

Bolshoi premium dancers Ekaterina Krysanova and Vladislav Lantratov were evidently glad about the result. “This ballet is about love, although the one might think there’s no plot. Once there are man and woman on stage it is about the love, anyway,” said Krysanova. There were no typical Shakespeare’s time scenography, but the modern interpretation that combined 16-century story and 20-century music has called a success.

The ballet is going to have 6 shows with New York City Ballet Orchestra conducted by Igor Dronov.

Let us remind, the Bolshoi Theater tour is included into the program of the 22nd Lincoln Center festival. George Balanchine's ballet Jewels celebrates the 50th anniversary in the frames of this festival as well.
