Sergievskoe Podvorie in Jerusalem opens doors for pilgrims

Two-storey building of 19th century for decades was not in Russia's possession, and only recently it was finally brought back. The metochion has become a shelter for believers, and also a Sunday school, a museum, and Imperial Orthodox Palestinian society (IOPS) official entity.

The solemn opening ceremony was held on the day of St. Sergius of Radonezh. IOPS Chairman Sergei Stepashin, Russian Ambassador in Israel Sergey Shein and other officials were present at the ceremony. Sergey Stepashin was pleased to say that the first pilgrims are already staying there.

Russia has returned Sergievsky farmstead with participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has asked Israel authorities about a possibility to return Russian historical building. After the agreement was reached, major restoration works had began. In all, Russian government has spent 10 million dollars.

Pilgrims from IOPS and The Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem has celebrated 170 this year, can comfortably stay in Sergievsky farmstead. Besides, various cultural meetings on this territory are to be organized.
