Russian female team wins World Chess Championships for the first time in its history

Russian female chess team has won domestic World Team Chess Championships. The tournament is taking place in Khanty Mansiysk, TASS reports. National team has become world champions after Russia’s Alexandra Kosteniuk played a draw with Ukraine’s Anna Ushenina.

Before the beginning of the final round, Russia led the championships by four points ahead of Ukraine. Our chess players needed just one draw for the victory. The results of the rest three games will become known later.

Russian chess team consisted of Alexandra Kosteniuk, Ekaterina Lagno, Valentina Gunina, Alexandra Goryachkina, and Olga Girahave won the World Team Chess Championships for the first time in history. Russian women already have been vice-champions four times and once gained bronze medals.

Winners of the male tournament are known in advance. The upper step of the winners’ podium is occupied by Chinese sportsmen.

Russian national team which used to hold the second place have not finished sessions with their rivals from the United States yet.
