Loveless by Andrei Zvyagintsev won jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival

29.05.2017

The Cannes Film Festival has ended at the French Cote D'Azur, according to TASS. The Festival jury headed by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar has announced winners the day before. The Square drama directed by Ruben Ostlund from Sweden received the main award – The Golden Palm. Loveless by Andrei Zvyagintsev was nominated for the main award and was bestowed by the jury prize.

It is worth reminding that Loveless is a story of a young couple’s divorce. They were so immersed into their own problems that they did not pay any attention to their twelve-year-old son Alyosha. One day the boy decides to run away from home.

The film was very positively evaluated by cinema critics, mass media and festival guests.

Russian film director, by the way, won the prize of the Cannes Film Festival for the best scenario in co-authorship with Oleg Negin few years ago. However, his collection still lacks The Golden Palm award. In opinion of Zvyagintsev, the jury prize is also honorable and it opens large opportunities for the film.

One more Russian feature was represented at Un Certain Regard program. The debut feature by a young moviemaker and operator Kantemir Balagov named Closeness won the Award of International Federation of Film Critics FIPRESCI at the Cannes Film Festival.
