Edward Makparland discovered more than thirty drafts and maps of Saint Petersburg dating back XVIII century at the Trinity College library in Ireland, as per RussianIreland website.

Library workers found drafts and maps with street plans, parks and definite buildings’ schemes of the Northern capital while they were working with the library catalogues. Overall, more than thirty large drawings and maps were discovered including the drawing of the Smolny Cathedral.

Despite the fact that the library stock was formed at the beginning of the 20th century, when the College administration purchased more than two hundred volumes from the Dutch barons Fagels and placed the editions in so-called Long Hall, library workers and teachers still find unknown books. The whole library occupies hundreds of shelves one mile in length.

Professor Makparland was very thrilled about his findings. He has understood immediately that the maps and drafts are related to Saint Petersburg and informed the Hermitage right away.

Our museum supported creation of XVIII century’s Saint Petersburg Architectural Drawings Album, which comprised all the discovered maps and drafts.
