Maslenitsa in New York had started one day before it’s actual beginning, on February 19. The Patriarchal Parishes in the USA and Russian Youth of America ran Wide Maslenitsa celebration, the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of the USA (http://ksors.org/en/) informs.

One of the most popular celebrations not only in Russian community but also among Americans interested in Russian traditions and cuisine, took place in Central Park. People dressed in traditional costumes were dancing, singing, playing games and of course eating pancakes.

Russian way of saying Farewell to winter and Hello to spring attracted some New York inhabitants not acquainted before with Maslenitsa. They stopped on their tracks, amused. Some of novices joined in.

Besides pancakes, all guests were treated with hot traditional Russian drink Sbiten, gingerbreads and bagels.

The most active participants tried themselves at fist fighting and other Russian traditional martial arts. By the dusk a happy crowd moved up to St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral to continue celebrations.
