Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis claimed on air of Baltikom radio station that children born in Latvia should gain the citizenship of the Republic. “We should stop being afraid”, the head of state added.

At present, an expert group, formed at the administrative office of the head of the country, plans to consider different variants of decreasing the number of non-citizens in Latvia, especially children. It concerns children born in Latvia and some privileges in the process of gaining citizenship. However, the acting law will not be cancelled and, consequently, the status of non-citizens for some people will be preserved.

However, Raimonds Vejonis remarked that he would not like to raise these sensitive questions before the elections to parliament and local government. He stressed out one more time that he was interested in decreasing the number of non-citizens in Latvia.

President of Latvia made similar statements last year as well. Raimonds Vejonis firmly believes that the unity of society is one of the most important aspects of national security. According to that principle, children whose parents do not have Latvian citizenship should gain it.
