Russian president Vladimir Putin congratulated new Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The new head of state is sure that his presidency being a very responsible role will facilitate further development of relations between two countries and will enable entering a new level of cooperation in all directions, which is of current interest to both, Germany and Russia.

Putin underlined once again that sustaining a constructive dialogue on all subjects of two-sided and international politics is very important to Russia. He also extended an invitation for the new president to pay a visit to the Russian Federation.

According to the member of Russian Parliament’s Upper Chamber Alexey Pushkov, election of Steinmeier as president has positive meaning for Europe, as per RIA Novosti. The Senator explained that “If Gauck squared accounts with us and demanded repentance”, Steinmeier, on the contrary, supports the quickest settlement of conflict with Russia.

The former German Foreign Minister, social-democrat leader Frank - Walter Steinmeier was elected President by the majority members of Federal Assembly the day before. The incumbent president Joachim Gauck is not running for reelection.
