Yury Grigorovich stages Stone Flower by Sergei Prokofiev at Mariinsky Theatre

The Stone Flower by Sergei Prokofiev is to become the first premiere presented by the Mariinsky Theatre this season, reports RIA «Novosti». The ballet production staged by Yury Grigorovich, 89, is dedicated to the 125th birthday anniversary of the great composer.

The last time Yury Grigorovich staged The Stone Flower was in the middle of the 20th century in 1957 at the Kirov Theatre. The ballet production will be 60 years old in 2017. The ballet presented over 190 times at the Kirov Theatre within 30 years was extremely popular with the audience.

The Stone Flower has been staged at theatres found in different towns and cities, including Novosibirsk, Tallinn, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Stockholm, and Prague. It was staged at the Bolshoi Theatre and was appreciated by the American and British audiences.

According to Yury Grigorovich, the new ballet production differs from its previous version of the last century. The choreographer says that time has changed and another sort of ballet dancers perform on stage nowadays and another type of audience visit theatres now.

Victoria Tereshkina, Ekaterina Osmolkina, Andrei Ermakov and Yury Smekalov dance their parts in the production being staged at the moment.
