OSCE expresses concern over deportation of Russian journalist from Latvia

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of Media Dunya Miyatovich believes that the Latvian authorities should examine the case dealing with the deportation of a Russian journalist from the country. According to her, such practice affects the democratic principle the freedom of media is based on negatively, reports ТАСС.

«Although, I do not put the right of each country to control its borders and protect its citizens in doubt, I am concerned about the fact that such a restrictive measure towards media might affect their freedom negatively», — Dunya Miyatovich claimed.

It is to be recalled journalist Ella Taranova representing MIA Russia Today took part in the Baltick Forum held in Latvia. She was detained by Latvian border guards just at the event. A day before it, she crossed the border successfully.

Nevertheless, the representatives of the Latvian law enforcement authorities have claimed today that the journalist is put on the so called banned list made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia. Ella Taranova crossed the border according her EU visa but later the border guards decided to detain her.

They began to make the ban list in 2014 and it due to the situation in Crimea and Ukraine.
