May 9 might become official holiday in Argentina

Photo: © Flickr/Finizio Argentina might start celebrating May 9. A meeting dedicated to the discussion of the matter has been held at the Memorial Complex, reports World Coordination Council of Russian Compatriots (WCCRC).

Secretary for Human Rights and Cultural Pluralism of Argentina Claudio Avruj, the Chairperson of the Coordination Council of Russian compatriots in Argentina Sylvana Yarmoluk and the representatives of the representational office of the MFA of the RF took part in the event.

It is supposed that May 9 will be celebrated in Argentina as a remembrance day of the victims of the Great Patriotic War. According to Claudio Avruj who is interested in the initiative, he is ready to address the relevant authorities with the idea of putting the date on the list of Argentinean official holidays.

According to statistics, the Russian community that settled down in Argentina yet in 1889 is one of the biggest foreign communities in the country. Over 100,000 descendants of Russian Empire, USSR and CIS immigrants live in Argentina at the moment, although according to unofficial sources, their number is three times as big as that. Lots of Russian compatriots living in the country speak Russian and follow Russian cultural traditions including the celebration of Victory Day.

It is to be recalled, that in May 2016, an exhibition telling about the holding of the Immortal Regiment campaign in Moscow was opened in the capital city of Argentina.
