A special edition of a collection of poems by Alexander Pushkin was presented yesterday in New York, reports TASS. The presentation of a book by an American poet and translator Julian Henry Lowenfeld took place at the National Art Club located in Manhattan yesterday. The event was part of the “Our Heritage” festival arranged by the Russian-American Foundation. The book named “My Talisman” is a collection of poems by Alexander Pushkin in Russian and English versions. It also includes extracts from Eugene Onegin and Pushkin’s biography. The book contains drawings made by the writer which illustrate the pieces of writing included into the book.

According to Julian Henry Lowenfeld, he included his favorite works by Pushkin into the book. His aim was to give English speaking people a chance to get to know poems by Alexander Pushkin better and that is the reason why the book contains both their English and Russian versions.

The introductory note was written by Director of the Institute of Russian Literature (IRLI) or Pushkin House at RAS Vsevolod Bagno. He underlined that translations made by Mr. Lowenfeld “correspond strictly to the Pushkin’s meter”. At that, the author managed to keep the poems’ rhyme sequence making the translation similar to their original version.

The American poet believes that the collection of poems by A. Pushkin will spark interest among those who love poetry and are interested in Russia. He also underlined a specific role literature that plays at the moment when relationships between America and Russia are tense.
