RT Passes Milestone of 2 Billion Views on YouTube

16.12.2014

The RT television network has become the first news outlet to receive 2 billion views on YouTube, viewership numbers far surpassing its main rivals CNN, Euronews and Al Jazeera, RT's press service reported Tuesday, Sputnik reports.

"[RT's] TV network includes channels in Russian, English, Spanish and Arabic languages, as well as RT America. The joint number of views significantly exceeds the competitors'. For example, it is 3.1 times higher than the US' CNN, 3.6 times higher than the European Euronews, and almost 2.5 times higher than Qatar's Al Jazeera," the press release said.

According to RT's editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan, such a significant number shows that RT "continues to lead in promoting alternative opinions online – the space that used to be dominated by the mainstream media."

"We are proud of this," Simonyan added, stressing that the channel will continue to work hart to remain YouTube's number one news producer.

The number of followers of RT's YouTube channels also exceeds its competitors. RT channels have over 2.5 million followers in total, five times the number BBC News and Euronews has and almost three times CNN's numbers, according to the channel.

RT International is the leader among the outlet's YouTube channels, with a record 1.3 billion views and 1.4 million followers. Earlier in 2014, YouTube awarded RT International with "The Golden Button" prize for reaching 1 million followers. Other RT’s channels received the “Silver Buttons” for 100,000 followers.

In 2013, RT became first television news channel to hit 1 billion views on YouTube and its footage of a meteorite hitting the Russian city of Chelyabinsk was viewed 38 million times. Back in 2012, US-based think tank Pew Research Center recognized RT as the top supplier of news content to YouTube.
