Learn Russian by Playing

08.12.2008

The final match in the 2008 German Championship Cup of “Learn Russian by Playing” was played last weekend in Gelsenkirchen.

Apart from the Russkiy Mir Foundation, the sponsors of the game included Gazprom-Germany and the Schalke-04 football club. The principal organizers were the German-Russian Forum and the Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature in Germany.

This year, organizers had far more work cut out for themselves than ever before. Whereas last year's championship was attended by about 50 schools from three German states, this year, more than 280 schools from all 16 states took part.

The main prizes will be trips to Russia. First place winners will be awarded a trip to Lake Baikal. Second place winners will visit Moscow, and third-place winners will visit St. Petersburg. Alexei Gromyko, director of European programs at the Russkiy Mir Foundation, made the awards and then announced a surprise – the two teams that tied for fourth place would be invited to attend the Third Assembly of the Russian World in Moscow on November 3, 2009.
