08.04.2009

The II International Literary Festival “Europe-2009,” which is organized by the Union of Russian Writers in the Czech Republic and supported by the Embassy of Russia in the Czech Republic, as well as RusInterCenter and the Russkiy Mir Foundation, will be held in Prague from April 11-12.

The festival’s organizing committee is headed by Yury Polyakov, chief editor of Literaturnaya gazeta. Other committee members include Sergey Levitsky, president of the Union of Russian Writers Czech Republic, Sergey Trusevich, chief editor at the Moscow-based publishing house Algorithm, and Boris Ionov, director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Prague.

The festival’s opening ceremony will be held on April 11 and will be attended by Alexei Fedotov, Russia’s ambassador to the Czech Republic, Yury Polyakov, and other honored guests.

That same day winners of the literary competition will be awarded in the categories of humorous prose, humorous poetry and children’s humor.

On April 12, a seminar on difficulties in publication will be held. Concerts, literary readings, master classes and book presentations are also scheduled over the two-day event.

According to Sergey Levitsky, the festival will host about 60 participants from Russia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Norway, Latvia and Ukraine. Czech journalists and representatives of public organizations will also be in attendance. All participants will be able to present their works at an exhibition sale that will be organized during the festival.

The main objectives of the festival are the preservation and development of Russian culture and language outside Russia, the strengthening of creative relationships for Russian-speaking authors, increasing contacts among translators who work both from and into Russian and supporting the development of modern children's literature in Russian.
